            Matchday  17th July

Mortgage Express Te Awamutu v Tauranga College

Focus is one of several keys to 90 minutes of Football, and on Saturday this key component disappeared in the 80th minute as Te Awamutu succumbed to the pressure that the visitors had put the home side under in those final 10 minutes, as they returned over the Kaimai’s the victors.

In the opening exchanges, it was Te Awamutu who nearly struck first blood as Matthew Missen stabbed the ball the wrong side of the post after some confident build up play through the midfield, and it was Missen again who went close as he fully stretched the visiting keeper with a rasping drive from the right hand side. With a formation set to combat the youthfulness of the visitors, it was a tactic that was paying dividends, as Adam Blake, and who was ably supported in attack by the center midfield of Yong, Kelly, and Missen, were a constant thorn moving quickly into space and timing the runs for the through balls. The first 45 mins should have seen Te Awamutu head in for the half time talk at least 4 goals to the good, but as in football if those chances aren’t taken then the whole talk takes on a new meaning, and this was the case. So at 0-0 it meant that it would be Tauranga who would the more pleased going in all square.

The second half started just as the first began, with Te Awamutu fresh from the encouraging words of coach Brierley at half time still ringing in their ears, and it was that encouragement that dealt the first blow to the visitors, as Adam Blake broke free from his marker and at full stride struck a right foot shot into the left hand side, giving the keeper no chance to make the save. With a renewed confidence instilled Te Awamutu went searching for a little security, and were close to being rewarded as they constantly had the visitors final 3rd under a constant threat, but the all important second goal was being eluded. Tauranga to their credit played some entertaining passing football throughout the ninety minutes, but pretty football doesn’t win games, but it does break down a resistance, and that is just what happened as the right winger managed to turn the defence and delivered a flighted cross into the mix, where the head of the Tauranga forward managed to angle the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the net. So at 1-1 it was a slight injustice for all the pressure that Te Awamutu had managed in those previous 80, had to be undone. Worst was to come as the central defence were out muscled by the strong Tauranga striker, and he slipped the ball to the right where it was struck with a purpose , and it managed to slide under the body of Danyon Drake!! All around couldn’t believe that a game that was in the destiny of the home side had been turned on its head in the space of 5 minutes, and it was compounded as Tauranga managed to rub the salt in with a third in the dying seconds.

With another 6 pointer next week away to Ngaruawahia, it means the management have a hard job to try and lift some very low heads, but with a belief, and some hard work at training, the job come Saturday will be made easier.

Man of the match was young Seamus Biddick, who tried in vain all afternoon to break down the slick passing moves that the visitors were putting together

Cape Physio Te Awamutu travelled to Taupo at the weekend to try and return with a piece of silverware in the shape of the Challenge Shield, but fell short as they succumbed to a 7-2 defeat.

Things started brightly for Te Awamutu, as James Maxwell, who was a thorn down the right side for Taupo managed to put a defender under pressure and in the melee came out with the ball and rounded the keeper to slot the ball into an empty net within the first 10 minutes. It is always important to concentrate after scoring, as this is a time where you are vulnerable, and this was the case as Taupo equalised a minute after. No pressure from the midfield allowed Taupo to slip a ball forward, and with a defence not focused the Taupo player was able to slot the ball past  Taupo old boy Danyon Drake, who was making his debut for the club. Danyon’s debut was going to be a busy one, as Taupo went into a 2-1 lead, as once again the focus was lost. The hosts were to go further in front, before Kyle Owens pegged back the difference with a beautifully taken 25 yard free kick, after James Maxwell had been fouled. This was a game where Te Awamutu weren’t in control, but was still in the game. A few adjustments and soul searching meant the second half brought more chance of goals, as Taupo were open to leaking goals, but it was Te Awamutu who leaked the goals.

Within 5 minutes of the restart the visitors found themselves further behind as the left winger slipped past a static Amelin Madjou and saw the space to kill any chance of a comeback from Te Awamutu. Further goals, including a penalty saw Taupo control this game from the beginning of the second half. Te Awamutu did have their chances within the second 45 minutes, but some decent goalkeeping from the hosts keeper put paid to those chances, and the chance of a comeback.

In a game where you are comprehensively beaten it is hard to pick out any individual performances, but a mention to debutant Danyon shouldn’t go a miss as he had no chance with any of the goals conceded, and in fact made some saves that in another game could have seen a bigger scoreline. James Maxwell was always prepared to run at the defence, so creating a problem or two. Overall a poor team performance that will need to be upped over the next few weeks if Te Awamutu are to become a force this season.

            Matchday 4

Mortgage Express Te Awamutu returned to league action over the weekend, after last weeks cup exploits, and welcomed Ngrauwahia to town and got back to winning ways with a 3-2 win over the bottom team.
Te Awamutu couldn’t have asked for a better start as they took the lead within the first five minutes, as midfielder Amelin Madjou pressurised the keeper into a hasty clearance and managed to get a foot in as he was clearing the ball and the deflection rolled across the line leaving the keeper holding his hands up asking what had just happened?
The next 40 mins saw Te Awamutu create chance after chance but went in at half time only one goal too the good. The home side should have extended their lead on several occasions leading up to half time, but for some reason the finishing exercises that the team put in through the week are just deserting them time after time in important area’s of the field, and this creates frustration, that in turn turns into a pressure cooker atmosphere for all. One day a team is going to be on the end of a hiding, but as it is Te Awamutu are just managing to hang onto leads that they take and aren’t able to put some distance between themselves and the opposition.

The second half saw, once again the home side going close on numerous occasions, but their luck certainly changed as left back Kyle Owens received a square ball from midfield, and in one movement with his right foot struck a ball with exocet proportions from fully 35 yards out, and what made it even more impressive was the slight angle he found himself in. The ball never deviated from its trajectory, and caught the Ngaruawahia keeper completely flatfooted and surprised. So with a bit of space in the score, the pressure was decreased, but only for a short while as Ngaruawahia managed to pull a goal back, so leaving the final 25 min’s on a bit of a knifedge. The introduction of Andrew Ryan seemed to be a master stroke as a ball swung in from the right was met at the far post by Ryan, and in an uncharacteristic way managed to meet the ball with his head, well we think his face, and the ball bounced down and over an outstretched arm of the keeper and nestled comfortably in the net, 3-1, game over surely!

The next 10 mins left the home support biting their nails, as once again the visitors managed to claw themselves back in the game as Amelin Madjou, who had started the scoring in the first five minutes was robbed on the edge of his own box, and the player slotted the ball past Kevin Buckle. The final stages of the game were played out in the midfield area’s and Te Awamutu managed to secure their second win of the season.

An overall performance from Hyong Yeung earned him the man of the match award, but a special mention also went to Tyler Barham, who at the age of 16 is looking a good prospect for the future.

            Matchday 3

Football can be a confusing game at times, and this week it was so evident, as Cape Physio Te Awamutu welcomed Otumoetai to Anchor Park in the qualifying round of the Chatham Cup. Last week the team succumbed to a 1 –0 defeat, and all would admit they just didn’t perform, yet this week they play some decent football but walk away with a 5-1 defeat, football can be cruel at times.

Otumoetai took the lead with a nicely taken goal from their forward Boldie. He was always the target for Otumoetai’s attacks and he was given the room just enough to punish a static defence. Te Awamutu tried in vain to find an equaliser, but just weren’t given the room to try and punish a defence, that only a few weeks earlier were ran ragged by a rampant forward line. This time they had the foresight to close each attack down quickly. Otumoetai managed to stretch their lead as Robbie Diaz cleared a nothing ball away, but as luck would have it, the ball struck keeper Kevin Buckle ankles as he couldn’t react in time to move away from the clearance and managed only to direct the ball into an empty net. With a 2-0 lead Otumoetai were able to play the game at their pace and always look for the forward who was constantly sitting on the shoulder of the last man, just waiting to pounce on any mistakes the back four would dish up, and this is just what happened as he was able to come on the blind side of central defender Carl Miezenbeek, and slot the ball past Kevin Buckle as he came out to close the angle. Te Awamutu had managed to get through on occasions, but their shooting boots had been left in the changing rooms.

After a bit of soul searching Te Awamutu came out for the second period determined to try and at least put some respectability into the score line, and make a fight of the game, and try as they did, once again the defence stood firm, and Otumoetai managed to extend their lead further, as they punished some sloppy defending. Te Awamutu have a motto, which if used in the correct way, teams would find visiting the club difficult, and not to be outdone, they found themselves getting a goal back, that they hoped would spark a gallant comeback. Jimmy Maxwell was able to show some nice footwork as he danced passed a pair of defenders and slotted the ball past a sprawling keeper. So was this to be game on,no!! As keeper Kevin Buckle managed to spill a cross a few minutes later at the feet of a grateful forward, who didn’t have any trouble finding the back of the net.

So having played awful last week, and coming away with a defeat this week, the team did play well in patches, and the score line isn’t justified, as mistakes played a major part, and some luck added to the win. If the team can get a structure and some fluidity into their game then the season will just roll along nicely for all concerned, and games will become easy. Football is a simple game made difficult by 22 players, as we can agree, so lets hope that that statement is taken in the right context, and drilled home in the coming weeks.

Man of the match for Cape Physio Te Awamutu was the ever-running Adam Blake.

            Matchday 2

Mortgage Express Te Awamutu returned from the sulphur city of Rotorua empty handed after a 1-0 defeat. The first 45 mins were something to forget about as Te Awamutu struggled on a hard, bumpy pitch, with a strong breeze blowing into their faces. Both sides struggled to put their mark on the game, but it was the home side that were creating chances. Playing the long ball game was their tactic and Te Awamutu struggled to contain this type of tactic, as they were always on the back foot. Some very odd decisions didn’t help the cause as management could see the frustration setting in. In these situations its best just to ignore and play. Unfortunately after 15 mins the plans of the visitors were put out of joint as Centre Half Robbie Diaz damaged a hamstring and had to be replaced by Amelin Madjou With this adjustment meant the back four had been disrupted and it was the home side that took the lead after 20 mins as Hamon McKay delayed in clearing a non troublesome ball, and was caught in possession. The forward calmly slotted the ball past the on rushing keeper Kev Buckle. Chances were at a premium for the rest of the half. When Te Awamutu did manage to get through a stubborn home defence, it was some smart defending on the line that denied Andy Wren the equaliser as he managed to beat all to the ball with a backwards header, only to see the defender clear the ball from under the crossbar.

The second half started with a more resurgent Te Awamutu on the attack looking for that leveller. Plenty of chances were on offer from some inventive play by Te Awamutu, but as the wrong options were taken it was Rotorua who just cleaned up anything that was thrown at them. The home keeper had to be smart though to turn a shot from the edge of the box around the left hand post after some creative play around the Rotorua 18 yard box. Adam Blake was covering quite a lot of ground up front and was unlucky to see a bullet drive sail just above the crossbar. Coach Norman Rose brought off young Burham Ahmed who had toiled without any luck down the right flank and was replaced by the stalwart Andrew Ryan Ryan tried to link himself with Dan Eaton in the front line, but without success, and Dan Eaton himself was replaced by Serge Madjou. Madjou did his best to use his burst of speed to try and get behind the defence, but once again options that were taken were the wrong ones. It seemed that this was just one game that Te Awamutu weren’t going to get anything from, and when that final whistle went it was obvious that the journey home was going to be a quiet one.

Man of the Match for Te Awamutu was given to Adam Blake who tried all afternoon to inject something into what was a deflated team.

            Matchday 1

The 2010 season started in earnest on Saturday as Cape Physio Te Awamutu made the trip up SH3 to visit Melville United. Pre season has been hard for the players and staff, so they were looking for the perfect start to their campaign. With new faces making their competitive debuts, it was a concern that maybe it would take a few games for them to start to perform as they tried to get to understand how the coaches wanted the game played. The first half was all Te Awamutu possession, however they lacked a cutting edge in front of goal, possession is good, but doesn’t secure points. A confidence was instilled into the team for the second half, as the clubs motto of Pride, Passion and Belief came to the fore as right back Hamon McKay linked up with the midfield and sent a cross across the Melville defence where Adam Blake was on hand to slip the ball into the net, five minutes into the second half. Focus is required as teams are most vulnerable after scoring a goal, especially so early into the second half, so it was no surprise to see Melville get their act together and tried in vain to create a problem or two for the Te Awamutu defence immediately after the opening goal. Their efforts though were short lived as Te Awamutu took a strangle hold on the game as they swept into a 2-0 lead, as debutant Andy Wren connected with a diving header at the back post after some good work on the left flanks. With chances being created, all who witnessed this must have thought when are the flood gates going to open, but Te Awamutu just couldn’t force the issue anymore than what they already had.

As coach Norman Rose decided to tinker a little and make changes, we saw young Dan Eaton, another debutant brought off and replaced by Jimmy Maxwell, who managed to slot Te Awamutu’s 3rd goal as he slipped un noticed behind a static Melville defence after a free kick wasn’t held by the Melville goalkeeper, the spillage falling nicely at Jimmy’s feet. Young left sided midfielder Booboo was brought off after playing three games prior to this in a tournament in the morning and replaced by the ever youthful Brett Peters, and Hyong Yeung who was everywhere in the midfield was replaced late on by Morgan Rees.

So an opening win sets the team up nicely, as we all know that in any sport, to open up with a win is every teams aim, and next weeks trip to Rotorua will be all the more easier in the confidence ranks. With an exceptional all round team performance it was hard to single out any player for the Man of the Match award, so in fairness the team will share the accolade.
